CTOnews.com, March 18, Wine is a free and open source compatibility layer that makes it possible to run Windows applications on computers running Linux, FreeBSD, or some other operating system. It is also the basis of Valve's Proton software that allows Steam Deck users to play Windows games on Linux-driven handsets.

Wine developers have now completed the initial support for the Wayland graphics driver so that it can replace X11 and work under the newer Wayland display server.

The early work of the Wayland driver was contributed by Alexandros Frantzis, with the following related release notes:

Winewayland.drv: add the initial driver stub.

Winewayland.drv: add the initial unixlib stub.

Winewayland.drv: performs basic Wayland initialization for each process.

Win32u: allows the driver to set the null user driver.

Winewayland.drv: report basic monitoring information.

Winewayland.drv: report all advertising monitoring modes to Wine.

The Wayland driver is not ready for end users, but it indicates that developers are now working to introduce support for native Wayland.

In addition to Wayland's initial support work, Wine 8.4 also provides IME-supported cleanup, some test fixes, and various bug Bug fixes. With the Wine download page attached to CTOnews.com, you can find binary packages for the distribution.
