On the morning of March 17, Beijing time, Amazon was sued by a class action on Thursday local time for failing to remind customers of the Amazon GO convenience store in New York that they were being monitored by facial recognition technology.

Alfredo Perez, the lawyer in charge of the lawsuit, said Amazon failed to inform customers that facial recognition was being used in the store, and New York required companies to post logos when tracking biometric information such as facial scans or fingerprints as a result of a 2021 law.

Launched in 2018, the Amazon GO convenience store promises that customers can take what they want directly from the shelves, without a traditional checkout process, and the account will be deducted automatically when they leave.

The lawsuit alleges that if Amazon Go is to successfully track customers and their purchases, it must continuously monitor their bodies and collect biometric information, but Amazon only recently posted a notice about the use of the technology, more than a year after the law came into effect.

Amazon has no immediate comment.
