Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, March 17 (Xinhua)-- A team of universities, including Duke University and Northwestern University, have found that using Apple's Apple Watch smartwatch can help patients with sickle cell disease predict pain.

Sickle cell disease is a hereditary red blood cell disease, usually accompanied by complications such as chronic anemia, stroke and vascular occlusive crisis (VOC). VOC is usually "unpredictable, difficult to treat, and is the main cause of hospitalization".

Using Apple's Apple Watch, the team can analyze monitoring data and use machine learning to help predict pain in patients with sickle cell disease and predict the trend of pain caused by VOC.

The researchers used multiple logical regression (multinomial logistic regression), gradient lifting (gradient boosting) and random forest (random forest) machine learning models, as well as two Null models to assess the accuracy of pain scores.

The team recruited 20 patients with sickle cell disease, all black or African-American, including 12 (60%) women and 8 (40%) men. CTOnews.com learned from the report that 14 people were diagnosed with hemoglobin type SS (70%). The median age of the population is 35.5 (IQR 30-41) years.

The average time for each person to wear Apple Watch was 2 hours and 17 minutes, and a total of 15683 data points were collected in the whole population. The best performing model is the random forest model, which can predict pain scores with 84.5% accuracy and 0.84 RMSE.

The researchers found that Apple Watch is a "novel and feasible method, and proposes a low-cost method that can benefit clinicians and patients with sickle cell disease in the treatment of VOC."
