CTOnews.com March 16 news, local time 15, NASA and Axiom Space (Axiom Space) to the outside world will be used for Artemis 3 mission lunar spacesuit prototype.

The suit, called Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), will be delivered to NASA late this summer.

This isn't NASA and a special suit, Axiom just signed a service contract with NASA, which also gives Axiom the freedom to sign agreements with other customers and reduces the cost of developing expensive hardware for the government.

Last September, NASA Extravehicular Activities Services (xEVAS) awarded the company a $228 million mission order for a $1.26 billion contract. Axiom also plans to build a commercial space station, so the suit's suitability for the market will be important.

Axiom Space It is worth mentioning that the outer color of the lunar spacesuit must be white to reflect heat to protect astronauts from extreme temperatures. This AxEMU spacesuit is only used for display purposes, so it is dark, mainly to hide some proprietary designs of the spacesuit.

In 2025, Artemis 3 astronauts will walk on the surface of the moon's south pole wearing axiomatic space design's next-generation spacesuit.

Thanks to this white mask, we can see the astronauts 'faces from the outside. In other words, in the future we will see a human face at the south pole of the moon, much better than the space suit at the time of Apollo.

The AxEMU suit can be increased in size and adjustability to accommodate a wider range of people. AxEMU is a versatile spacesuit that is safer and more flexible for safe and effective extravehicular activities in microgravity environments.

The suit has an inner layer, called the airbag layer, which mainly contains the air inside. Its outer layer is covered with a constraint layer, which keeps the inner layer in a certain shape. Above this layer is a multi-layer insulation layer, which can protect astronauts from harsh space environments, such as extreme temperatures and ultraviolet rays. There is also a layer of aluminized polyester film inside the insulation layer, which helps to insulate, and the insulation layer is the most important part of the spacesuit, which cannot be cut or penetrated. It must ensure the safety of astronauts.

Axiom was designed to prevent dust from collecting on the spacesuit in space, and must not allow dust to contaminate the lunar lander. To achieve this, the suit needs to be self-cleaning and ensure that dust does not escape into the environment, so it is designed so that dust will fall off once it touches the outside.

Of course, no matter what kind of spacesuit, it must ensure the safety of astronauts. Its revolutionary features are also life support systems, including water evaporators and key parts such as cooling systems, which have been developed for a full 20 years to show results.

The suit still uses a rear backpack to house life-support systems such as oxygen and thermal control. The suit is also said to be a significant upgrade to the Apollo suit's maneuverability, enabling astronauts to "fully bend their knees" and pick up equipment or other objects from the lunar surface.

Compared to the common cabin interior, this kind of spacesuit greatly reduces the weight while supporting dust and radiation protection. It can not only be worn by one person, but also does not appear to fall down and cannot stand up.

It is said that astronauts can wear the suit for eight hours, longer than the current six and a half hours. The suit is also designed for a higher metabolic rate, giving astronauts more room for vigorous activity.

It is worth mentioning that this spacesuit is different from SpaceX's suit, at least SpaceX will tailor a new spacesuit for each astronaut. Axiom can only replace different parts of the suit, such as elbows and knees, to accommodate different body types. According to Ralston, the suit is designed to fit between 1 percent of women and 99 percent of men.

Axiom's Deputy EVA Project Manager Russell Ralston explained that as part of the Artemis 3 mission planned for 2025, the suite will not be tested on the space station before flying to the Moon.

According to NASA specifications, the first manned mission, Artemis 2, will take place next year, but astronauts will only be able to fly around the moon until Artemis 3, when SpaceX's Starship lunar lander will transport them to the lunar surface and allow humans to land on the moon again.
