CTOnews.com, March 16, CTOnews.com learned from Northwestern University that two new minerals applied by the Department of Geology of Northwestern University, Associate Professor Liu Peng of State key Laboratory of Continental Dynamics and Professor Li Guowu of China University of Geosciences (Beijing) have recently been approved by the Professional Committee on Nomenclature and Classification of New Minerals (IMA-CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Society.

The International Mineralogical Society of the new mineral is numbered IMA2022-120and IMA2022-142.The English names are yuchuanite- (Y) and wenlanzhangite- (Y) respectively, and the Chinese names are Yuchuan yttrium carbonate ore and Wenlan vanadium yttrium ore.

Yuchuan yttrium carbonate ore is a rare hydrous carbonate heavy rare earth mineral found in Yushui Copper Mine in northeastern Guangdong Province. It is named after China's famous deposit geologist and mineral prospector, former director of China Geological Survey and Academician Chen Yuchuan of Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Wenlan vanadium yttrium ore is named after Professor Zhang Wenlan of School of Geosciences and Engineering of Nanjing University and an expert in electron probe analysis.

The discovery of new minerals in the crystal structure diagram of ▲ Wenlan vanadium yttrium ore belongs to the original achievement of 0 to 1, which represents a breakthrough in the basic research of mineralogy. Up to now, a total of about 5900 minerals have been found in the world, but only about 5900 have been discovered by Chinese scientists.
