CTOnews.com, March 16 (Xinhua)-- Fortnite game developer Epic Games was fined $520 million by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in December last year for "invading children's privacy and inducing them to buy games."

FTC ruled that there was a "dark mode" in Fortnite, charging players unnecessary and unwitting fees. According to the latest FTC announcement, US $245 million has been identified out of the 520 million fines and compensation procedures have been initiated.

CTOnews.com translated the FTC statement as follows: "the FTC has finalized an order requiring Epic Games, the maker of 'Fortnite' video games, to pay $245 million to consumers to settle the company's allegations that the company used dark patterns to trick players into making unwanted purchases and to make children pay unauthorized fees."

The Commission said that some Epic employees expressed concern about the default privacy settings for teenagers, such as the fact that the voice chat function should clearly allow users to choose before using it. The Commission said that voice and text chat functions must be turned off in the default settings of Epic in the future.
