March 16, a former Apple employee said in an interview that the code design of Apple's voice assistant Siri is outdated and complex, and it is impossible to become as powerful as the OpenAI artificial intelligence chat robot ChatGPT.

John John Burkey, a former Apple engineer, was ordered to improve the Siri in 2014 and left Apple in 2016. He says Siri's clumsy design makes it difficult to add new features.

Mr Birkie said Siri was able to answer simple questions such as "what's the weather like today" or "you can play this song" by extracting information from databases that store a large number of words such as the location of restaurants or the names of musicians. As a result, the number of requests that Siri can respond to is limited, he says, and engineers must constantly add new words to the database to expand its functionality.

Berky admits that Apple's Siri database is "a big snowball," and it can take up to six weeks to add new words, as engineers need to fully fix the database, and it may even take a year or so to integrate advanced features like Chatgpt, such as search. It could take weeks to update even the basic functions of Siri, because Apple's Siri code is outdated and complex, Mr. Berkey said.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

At present, especially after OpenAI upgraded its large language model to GPT-4, the popular artificial intelligence chat robot ChatGPT is threatening voice assistant technology with new features that people are passionate about.

Satya Satya Nadella, Microsoft's chief executive, who recently invested another $10 billion in OpenAI, has said voice assistants such as Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa are "as stupid as stone".

Adam Cheyer, co-founder of Apple's Siri, agrees. He also said that ChatGPT can automatically write articles and develop code, which makes the existing voice assistants on the market look stupid. Cheyer said, "the ability before is really too weak chicken."

Apple Siri users have also noticed this, expressing their dissatisfaction, asking questions such as "Why is Siri so stupid" and "is Siri getting stupider year after year".

But Siri is not the only voice assistant in trouble. It was reported in November that Amazon's Alexa division had an operating loss of more than $3 billion that year and is now just maintaining a sense of presence.

"Alexa is a huge failure of imagination," says one former Amazon employee. "opportunities are wasted."

Like Amazon, Google finds it difficult for its voice assistants to generate significant revenue, according to former managers of Amazon and Google. However, both Amazon and Google say they will continue to build their own voice assistant features.

According to reports, employees of Apple's Siri team have been testing artificial intelligence language models, but no products have been released yet.
