CTOnews.com, March 15 (Xinhua) in an announcement issued in February, MediaTek and Samsung promoted the standards-based 3GPP Release 17 satellite NTN (non-terrestrial network) connection technology in their mobile chipset products. According to TechInsights, this standards-based approach to satellite connectivity contrasts sharply with Apple and Qualcomm's respective mobile RF designs, software solutions and proprietary solutions from satellite constellation partners.
MediaTek MT6825 NTN chipset
MT6825 is a stand-alone 3GPP Release 17 NB-IoT NTN SoC and RF solution designed to serve as an attached solution for existing smartphone designs. The chipset will provide narrowband satellite connections at data rates of kilobits per second, using the common Lines band satellite frequencies, and for services such as two-way messages.
Smartphones with the chipset include Motorola's Defy 2 and CAT S75. Bullitt, the manufacturer of both devices, also announced a partnership with the International Maritime Satellite Organization (Inmarsat) as one of the two GEO satellite providers and with Skylo as an integrator of telephone-to-satellite communications software and networks.
Samsung Exynos 5300
Samsung Electronics said it has successfully simulated 3GPP standardized NTN communications on the existing Exynos 5300 5G modem platform. The demonstration of 3GPP Release 17 NTN technology ensures that future Exynos modem designs that support 3GPP standards will have the necessary interoperability and scalability to provide two-way satellite messages from telecom operators and equipment manufacturers around the world. Currently, Exynos 5300 modems are used on Google's Pixel 7 series of smartphones.
The 3GPP Release 17 NTN standard establishes a reliable satellite NTN communication method, which can minimize the frequency offset caused by Doppler shift caused by fast moving satellites in low-Earth orbit by accurately predicting satellite position. This standardized approach allows industry participants such as satellite constellation providers, telecom operators, and mobile device manufacturers to achieve interoperability and develop ecosystems of partners and suppliers.
Satellite NTN communications will continue to develop over time to provide services other than basic information. 3GPP Release 17 also showcases the 5G NR NTN connection standard, which leverages new 5G radios and additional spectrum resources to introduce broadband satellite phone (satellite-to-phone) services. Improvements in network protocols and signaling optimization are expected to significantly improve network latency, which will make more non-coverage smartphone use cases possible.
New satellite-specific bands (N255 and N256) based on the 3GPP standard will be the key to bringing new broadband NTN functions and use cases to market. The adoption of band n255 and n256 will also have an impact on RF front-end components, as the industry may support these new 5G bands in future smartphone designs.
The standard protocol and air interface established by 3GPP are the basis of LTE and 5G. It is clear that satellite connections will follow similar common standards. However, competitive market decisions with proprietary solutions do complicate the satellite NTN landscape in the context of Apple and Qualcomm. In addition, the satellite-to-standard telephone business model promoted by satellite providers such as StarLink, Lynk Global and AST SpaceMobile, as well as wireless operator partners, will further complicate the market with their solutions.
