CTOnews.com, March 14 (Reuters)-the European Commission said EU antitrust regulators have extended its decision by US chipmaker Broadcom to buy cloud computing company VMware for $61 billion for two weeks to June 21 (Tuesday).

The EU competition regulator said the extension was negotiated with Broadcom, which is seeking to diversify into enterprise software.

The committee is expected to warn Broadcom about the potential anti-competitive impact of the proposed deal in the coming weeks, according to people familiar with the matter.

CTOnews.com briefly reviewed the information, and the European Commission launched an investigation in December last year, saying that the deal would allow Broadcom to limit market competition for certain hardware components that interoperate with VMware software. Broadcom said it would continue to work "constructively" with the committee. The deal has been approved in Brazil, South Africa and Canada, and Broadcom aims to complete the acquisition in fiscal year 2023.

In addition, antitrust authorities in the US and UK are also investigating Broadcom's acquisition of VMware.

Broadcom's deal with VMware is one of the world's biggest deals in 2022, marking the chipmaker's attempt to diversify into enterprise software.
