CTOnews.com, March 14 (Xinhua) Tesla is facing a lawsuit claiming that the door knob of the company's Model S vehicles from 2014 to 2016 was defective. However, Tesla claimed that the problem "will not make the car unsuitable for sale", so the company hopes the lawsuit will be dismissed.

John L. Urban, a Florida resident who owns the 2015 Tesla S P85D, initially encountered a problem with a door handle that didn't pop up. Tesla repaired it for free, but then two other doorknobs had the same problem, costing him about $300 for each repair (CTOnews.com Note: about 2058 yuan currently).

Urban said that when the door handle is broken, people outside the car must enter the car through other doors, which "poses a significant safety risk in an emergency."

Tesla pointed out that Urban is not qualified to file a lawsuit because he is a Florida resident but filed a claim under California law. The carmaker also pointed out that the design defects referred to by Urban are not even covered by Tesla's warranty, which only covers manufacturing defects and does not include design defects. Finally, Tesla added that the plaintiff filed only one warranty claim and was repaired free of charge.

In rejecting the motion, Tesla wrote: "it is well known that residents of a state cannot represent a national collective that advocates consumer protection and guarantee claims, because the claims of each collective member will be governed by the laws of his or her state."

Tesla also pointed out that Urban basically did not do his homework on this known problem when he bought the car, and the company said the plaintiffs had not proved any safety risks associated with defects in the design of the doorknob.
