CTOnews.com March 14, Ross Young, CEO of screen supply chain consulting firm DSCC, has said that Apple is expected to launch an Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch with MicroLED panels in 2025. Another source, DigiTimes, reconfirmed the news from the supply chain.

In a paid article by DigiTimes, it was highlighted that Apple has been actively promoting MicroLED panel technology since it acquired California startup LuxVue in 2014. Given that microLED display production is still challenging and more expensive to manufacture, Apple chose to be the first to deploy on the Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch.

CTOnews.com did not subscribe to the paid article, but learned from foreign technology media MacRumors reports that the main supplier of Apple's MicroLED panel chip is Germany's ams OSRAM, and Crystal element Optoelectronics will provide some MicroLED chips from 2026 to 2027.

Pu said that the new Apple Watch Ultra may have a larger 2.1in display, and microLED technology can increase the brightness compared to the existing OLED display Apple Watch model.
