CTOnews.com, March 13 (Xinhua)-- researchers using data collected by Apple Watch from the Apple Heart and exercise study (Apple Heart and Movement Study) show that most people don't get enough sleep every night. The study, published this month by Brigham Women's Hospital (Brigham and Women's Hospital), is based on sleep data from more than 42000 Apple Watch users.

Researchers at Brigham Women's Hospital analyzed sleep data from more than 2.9 million nights from Apple Watch users. They found that only 31% of people slept at least seven hours a night, which is the minimum sleep time recommended for healthy adults.

According to CTOnews.com, the American Heart Association (American Heart Association) recommends seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Failing to sleep at least seven hours a night increases the risk of "cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline and dementia, depression, obesity and elevated blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels".

The researchers collected their data from the Apple Heart and exercise study. The study was first announced by Apple in 2019, and anyone can participate through the Apple Health app or Apple Research app on iPhone.

Using these data, the researchers got some interesting data:

On weekdays, 66.4 per cent of people went to bed before 12:00 in the morning, but that number fell to 56.6 per cent on weekends.

Washington state has the highest percentage (38.3%) of residents who get more than seven hours of sleep as recommended by the American Heart Association. The state of Hawaii has the lowest ranking, at 24.2%.

For participants who shared sleep data for at least 10 nights (a total of 42455 participants), each person slept an average of 6 hours and 27 minutes per night.

Despite state-to-state differences, no more than 40% of residents in all states get the sleep time recommended by the American Heart Association.
