CTOnews.com March 13 news, CTOnews.com learned from the official website of the Zijinshan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the International asteroid Center (MPC) issued a notice on February 27, confirming that the newly discovered near-Earth asteroid 2023 DU of the Zijinshan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is an Apollo-type near-Earth asteroid with a diameter of about 30 meters, and it is also the first near-Earth asteroid discovered in China in 2023. The asteroid flew close to the Earth-Moon system on March 5, Beijing time.

The Zijinshan Observatory said that the 2023 DU was first observed by the Zi Observatory's near-Earth object Telescope on February 20, 2023, when the target was a fast-moving small object with an apparent brightness of 20.8 and an apparent speed of 0.535 degrees per day, and more tracking observations were urgently needed to accurately determine the orbit. Zitai shared the data to MPC and initiated the follow-up observation of other observation equipment, but it did not attract enough attention. On February 22 and 25, the near-Earth object telescope continued to track and observe the target. At that time, the target had been brightened four times, the apparent speed had reached 1.471 degrees per day, and it was moving rapidly towards the earth. At this time, the goal was followed by international attention and follow-up observation. Zitai Station also drives the 80cm telescope of Yao'an Observatory and the 60cm telescope of Xingming Observatory to track the target. The orbit of the target was finally determined on February 27, and forecasts show that the near-Earth asteroid flew at a relative speed of 11.74km / s at a distance of 3.3x the moon at 09:45 on March 5, Beijing time.

On March 1, MPC also announced three near-Earth asteroids discovered by Zitai (2023 DM1, 2023 DO1, 2023 DP1). So far, the near-Earth object telescope has discovered a total of 36 new near-Earth asteroids.

According to reports, the Zitai near-Earth object Telescope, as the only special equipment for near-Earth object monitoring in China, is the only backbone equipment for China to join the International asteroid early warning Network (IAWN) to carry out data sharing. The Zitai near-Earth object Telescope discovered four near-Earth asteroids with a diameter of 30m, 50m, 100m and 200m, and worked with the Zitai high-precision astrometric telescope to track and measure them, and successfully warned the 30-meter NEO 2023 DU flyby system two weeks in advance.
