This is the first time that China's self-developed terahertz detection equipment has successfully operated in the extreme environment of the Antarctic inland.
The Zijinshan Observatory said that the ice dome A where the Kunlun Station in Antarctica is located is a unique excellent site for terahertz astronomical observation on the ground, and it is also a place of scientific exploration of strategic significance. The 39th Chinese Antarctic Scientific Expedition left Shanghai for Antarctica with the "Xuelong 2" and "Xuelong" polar research ships in October 2022, and sent inland teams to Kunlun Station and Taishan Station again after an interval of three years. Researchers at Zijinshan Observatory participated in the Antarctic inland scientific expedition, carrying a set of Antarctic terahertz exploration experimental system independently developed by China, including key core equipment independently developed, such as terahertz superconducting receiver, terahertz signal source, cryogenic refrigerator and small high-precision antennas.
According to reports, researchers have carried out terahertz astronomical trial observation and communication transceiver demonstration experiments at Kunlun Station and Taishan Station respectively, realizing the successful operation of China's independently developed terahertz detection equipment in the extreme inland environment of Antarctica for the first time, and accurately measuring the atmospheric transmittance of the 0.5THz observation window in Ice Dome A, which further improves the previous terahertz astronomical site measurement results. It is of guiding significance for the future terahertz astronomical observation in Antarctica. This experiment also realizes the experiment of receiving and transmitting terahertz signals in the kilometer-level 0.5THz band in the Antarctic inland area for the first time, which lays a foundation for further research and experimental verification of the next generation communication technology in Antarctica in the future.
