1. What is the Milky way?

two。 What is the shape of the Milky way at different times?

3. How do I find the location of the Milky way?

4. The environmental requirements for shooting the Milky way?

5. How do I set camera parameters?

6. What are the common shooting methods?

What is the Milky way? the Milky way, also known as Tianhe in ancient times, looks like a light white belt to the naked eye, just like a river in the night sky. There are two very bright stars on both sides of the Milky way, one is called Altair, the other is called Vega. Cowherd and Weaver Girl is a fairy tale familiar to Chinese people.

Since the earth is in the Milky way, we see that the Milky way is a bright region with a circular band. As you can imagine, there is a rotating ring, and the earth is at the center of the ring. The center of the Milky way is the brightest part, known as the Galactic Center, which is also the focus of Galactic photography.

The brightest part in the lower right corner of ▲ is Yinxin 02. The shape of the Milky way is in the Northern Hemisphere. March to October is the best season to photograph the Milky way. It's March, and the Milky way will rise in the east around 4: 00 in the morning. The Milky way will rise earlier and earlier. At the end of October, it will rise in the morning and cannot be seen during the day. When it gets dark, the Milky way will fall.

When the Milky way rises at the beginning, it spans the east and is shaped like an arch bridge, so it is called "Silver Arch". Sometimes the moon appears just below the arch bridge, and the combination of the two is like an eye, which is called the Eye of the Milky way.

▲ Galactic Arch Bridge (apod.nasa.gov) as the earth rotates, the celestial bodies rise in the east and fall in the west, and the silver arch will slowly rise (we come to the bottom of the silver arch), and what we see is the Milky way to the south.

▲ Vertical Milky way time continues, tilting the upper end of the vertical Milky way westward, a form known as the "reverse Milky way". After that, either the Milky way goes down, or the sun rises, and it will not be seen.

▲ reverse Galaxy is suitable for shooting Silver Arch in March and June. When the silver arch rose in July, the sun was still setting. After dark, the Milky way is close to vertical form.

In the northern hemisphere, we will see that the silver center is located on the right side of the silver arch, closer to the ground. The closer you are to the equator, the closer the center of the silver is to the middle and the farther away from the ground. So we will see different pictures of the Milky way, which is related to the location, but Heilongjiang and Hainan are different.

How to find the location of the Milky way although the Milky way in the photo is very clear, it is the effect of long exposure and post-enhancement. Viewed directly with the naked eye, the Milky way is a light white belt. If you live in a good environment, you can look for it directly with your eyes.

By talking about the shape of the Milky way in the previous paragraph, we can roughly tell which direction the Milky way is in. If you can't find it with your eyes, you have to use all kinds of App.

▲ uses software to determine the location of the Milky way there are many stargazing software, such as skillful photography, starry walking and so on, which can be downloaded on the mobile phone, and you can find the exact location of the Milky way after downloading.

You are also welcome to share the software you think is easy to use in the message area.

04. The environment for shooting the Milky way requires something called "light pollution". In areas with dense lights, you can't see the stars and the Milky way. For example, if the car opposite turns on the headlight, your line of sight will be disturbed. The reason is the same.

On the left is the starry sky I photographed in the city, and on the right is the starry sky I photographed in the countryside. Both photos are very close to the naked eye.

If we want to see the starry sky and photograph the Milky way, we have to stay away from light pollution. And the power of the light is so powerful that even if you are 10 kilometers away from the city, you still can't avoid the interference of the light. Although there are less lights in the countryside, there is also strong light pollution. Cities and rural areas are dotted with light pollution, which is becoming denser and denser with the development of society.

You can use the light pollution map (also known as "light damage map") to find the best location to shoot.

Black area, no light pollution, shooting paradise.

Gray area, almost no light pollution, super great.

In the blue area, there is a small amount of light pollution but little impact, and the environment is also very good.

Green zone, barely, to tell you the truth, yellowish green is not very good, dark green can also try.

Yellow area, light pollution is heavy, not suitable.

Red and purple areas, don't even think about it, you can't see it, you can't get it.

I would also like to remind you that the light pollution map was made seven or eight years ago, and now the light pollution is more serious than before, and the map will have some errors (that's why green is not very good).

In addition to the lights, we also have to guard against moonlight. The moonlight at the full moon is so strong that many stars can't be seen, let alone the Milky way. The ancient poem says, "the moon is bright and the stars are rare, and the black magpie flies to the south."

It is best to photograph the Milky way when there is no moon in the sky, or when there is only a thin meniscus. Today is the nineteenth day of the lunar calendar, the moon is getting smaller and smaller, and a good time to shoot is coming.

The second is the weather, cloudy days, rainy days, sunny days, haze days, which day can be filmed and which day can not be filmed, needless to say.

05. set camera parameters to focus: select the brightest star (such as Jupiter, Mars) and enlarge the screen. Toggle MF and turn the focus ring until the stars become clear. (you can also use the "hyperfocal length" principle to focus, you can get a greater depth of field, see the previous article: why when shooting stars, focus to infinity, but also twist back? )

Aperture: it is recommended to open to the maximum. If you are worried about falsification and declining picture quality, you can also use the maximum aperture. But not lower than F4, in fact, F3.5 is also a bit small, F2.8 is a very appropriate aperture.

Shutter: divide 500 by your equivalent focal length (star 500 rule). For example, the focal length of the lens is 20mm, 500 / 2025 seconds. When the stars move, they will trail over a long period of time. Generally take 500 rule as the bound, do not exceed this value. Of course, you don't have to enforce it, and 30 seconds won't be a problem. If you can get it in 15 seconds, it can take 15 seconds.

ISO: usually between 1600 and 6400. It can increase the exposure, and the picture quality will not decrease too much. Adjust flexibly according to the on-site environment and the high quality of your camera.

The commonly used shooting method: the Galaxy Arch Bridge generally spans the east and is relatively long, so it is shot with horizontal screen or panoramic film.

Horizontal screen shooting, that is, horizontal screen shooting, after shooting to see if it is all taken.

Panoramic pick-up is to put the camera up, each shot is only part of the silver arch. Finally, all the photos (5-8 photos can be taken) are stitched together into one. About the method of picking up the film, look at the previous article: the panoramic film is majestic, the shooting method is so simple!

Landscape is also a very important element, almost all sky photography, need landscape as a foil. If you look at more good photos, you will find the landscape. A tree, a person, and a mountain can all be used as landscapes.

Sometimes we also need to use post-revision to enhance the shape of the Milky way through brightness contrast and adjust beautiful colors through white balance and HSL tools.
