The company said the decision was due to "a lot of resources needed to support Talk in the short term-more than we expected".

According to CTOnews.com, Talk was launched in April 2021, when Clubhouse, a voice chat room app, was all the rage and other social networks followed suit. The reason for stopping its service now is that the third-party voice provider used by Reddit is also about to shut down. The company said in its announcement that it did not want to deal with the issue while trying to simplify its core platform and improve its infrastructure, a focus that Reddit Chief Product Officer Pali Bhat recently discussed on Decoder.

From March 21, users will be able to download archives of Talk held after September 1, 2022, and will be available by June 1. The company said it would provide more details about the download as the shutdown date approaches.

Although Reddit said that voice has a place in its goal of "becoming the default home of the community," it did not provide any timetable for when the voice feature or Talk itself will return. At the same time, Reddit is introducing other features to compete with video platforms like TikTok, including the development of independent video and text streaming capabilities that allow users to focus on one form of content.
