Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com March 10, the upcoming Game developers Conference (GDC) on March 20 is an annual professional meeting for video game developers and related industries. According to the latest news, Nvidia and CDPR will demonstrate the latest ray tracing technology at the conference on March 22.

Nvidia is currently looking to promote path tracing through RTX 40 graphics cards. This technology will be called RT: Overdrive in Cyberpunk 2077.

According to reports, ray tracing and path tracing are two popular methods in computer graphics to simulate the behavior of light in a virtual environment. RayTracing is a deterministic process that involves tracing the path of rays and their interactions. This technique requires a lot of processing power, and the advantage is that it can generate high-quality images with accurate reflections, refractions and shadows.

Path tracing, by contrast, is a randomly calculated process that involves sampling the ray path as it passes through the scene. The computational cost of this technique is lower than that of ray tracing, but it produces image noise and requires multiple iterations to converge to high-quality results. Path tracking is commonly used in applications that require accurate physical simulation of light, such as architectural visualization and product design.

▲ path tracing (left) vs. Ray tracing (right) however, path tracing is not widely used in games, and light tracing sounds more natural, but the hardware requirements also seem higher. Nvidia's previous "Portal RTX" uses path tracking, which requires RTX 3060 and above and DLSS 2 for 1080p 30 frames.

On GDC, CDPR and Nvidia will show a new game setting called RT: Overdrive. This mode will be used to enable path tracking in Cyberpunk 2077, which will also be the first modern 3A game to support this technology. The brief introduction of the meeting attached to CTOnews.com is as follows:

CDPR's Cyberpunk 2077 is technically one of the most challenging games on the market, thanks to its huge world size and visual diversity. Its neon lighting environment and vast night city landscape have broken through the current limit of real-time graphics. RT: the Overdrive pattern is designed to take RTX path tracing to a new level by introducing it into a combination.

We are all very familiar with the limitations of current real-time direct and indirect lighting algorithms. Things such as non-shadow casting light with a non-physical range, low-resolution indirect light multiplied by screen space ambient light masking or screen space reflection are still widely used. Although they provide satisfactory performance on low-end hardware, they limit the highest image quality and reduce the flexibility of content creators.

RTX path tracing is designed to minimize restrictions on content creators by providing perfect soft shadows and indirect light from all lights (whether analyzing local lights, self-illuminated surfaces, skylights) in a fully dynamic environment.
