CTOnews.com March 10 News, Nippon Keizai Shimbun reported that by fiscal year 2030, Mitsubishi Motors will invest about 1.4 trillion yen in research and development and equipment for electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HV).

Mitsubishi is expected to launch nearly 10 new electric vehicles over the next five years and will invest about 200 billion yen in on-board batteries to ensure its safety. The company plans to launch a re-growth strategy with Southeast Asia and Japan as its main overseas markets and consolidate the foundation of its transition to electric vehicles.

Of the 1.4 trillion yen invested in electrification, Mitsubishi Motors is prepared to invest about half of its investment in research and development and equipment, will promote the development of new production cars, and plans to launch about 15 new cars (including gasoline vehicles) in the next five years, more than half of which are pure electric cars, hybrids and plug-in hybrid models.

Electric cars now account for only about 10 per cent of the brand's global new car sales. The company says it hopes to increase its share of electric vehicle sales to 50 per cent by 2030 and plans to achieve that through a series of strategies.

In the field of pure electric vehicles, the company launched the pure electric subcompact "eK X EV" ("X" pronounced "cross") and the commercial "Kei" car, the Minicab MiEV, last year.

The "eK X EV" starts at 1848000 yen (CTOnews.com) in Japan and about $14000 in the United States, with a 20-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a range of 112 miles.
