Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, March 9 (Xinhua)-- despite declining sales and a weak market, Apple will continue to dominate Japan's smartphone market share for the whole of 2022.
The fourth quarter of 2022 was tough for Apple due to production problems with the iPhone 14 Pro, which dragged down an otherwise positive year. However, new data show that Apple maintains its dominant position in Japan despite obstacles.
A report from IDC Japan breaks down smartphone shipments in Japan in the fourth quarter and throughout 2022. The data show that Apple's iPhone continues to be the best-selling product in the market, ahead of competitors such as Sharp, Samsung and Sony.
Japanese smartphone Q4 smartphone shipments in Japan fell 16% to 8.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2022. Apple sold 51.9% of its devices, or a total of 4.41 million, followed by Android makers with 4.1 million.
Total shipments of the smartphone market and Android / iOS operating systems fell at a similar rate-about 16%.
Judging from the fourth-quarter performance of suppliers of conventional mobile phones (including smartphones and non-smartphones), Apple topped the list with 51.2%. Sharp shipped 1.2 million units (13.8% share), Samsung shipped 750000 units (8.7% share), fourth FCNT shipped 730000 units (8.5% share), and Sony shipped 560000 units (6.5% share).
In addition, the number of conventional mobile phones (including smartphones and non-smartphones) in 2022 was 34.3 million in 2022, down 8.1 per cent from a year earlier. Among the top five in market share, Apple topped the list with 16.6 million units (48.4 per cent), followed by Sharp with 3.8 million (11.1 per cent) and FCNT 3.5 million (10.3 per cent). Samsung 3.1 million (9.0% share) ranked fourth, while Sony 2.6 million (7.5% share) ranked fifth.
The report attributes Apple's continued success to smartphone promotions by operators. The decline in iPhone sales in the quarter was due to a weaker yen, global inflation and the end of retailer iPhone sales. In addition, except for some low-cost models, the Android system is affected by orders adjusted by telecom operators in anticipation of a recent decline in demand.
A report by Masafumi Ibe, a market analyst at IDC, mentioned that the difficulties in the smartphone supply chain are another factor. As 5G becomes a stable commodity element, manufacturers need to look for new technologies to drive sales.
