CTOnews.com, March 9 (Xinhua)-- Global sales of passenger electric vehicles (pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids) rose 53% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2022, bringing total sales to more than 10.2 million units in 2022, up 65% from a year earlier, according to the latest Counterpoint data.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, pure electric vehicles accounted for nearly 72% of all electric vehicle sales, with the rest being plug-in hybrids, the report said. China, Germany and the United States are the top three electric car markets. The top 10 electric vehicle groups have more than 39 passenger car brands, accounting for nearly 72% of total electric vehicle sales in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Tesla's Model Y is still the best-selling model in the world, followed by BYD Song.

Counterpoint analysts expect sales of electric vehicles to reach nearly 17 million by the end of 2023. Lithium prices are also expected to fall in the second half of 2023, which will help sales of electric cars.
