CTOnews.com, March 8 (Xinhua) Musk and the European Union have disagreed over the former's use of more volunteers and artificial intelligence to help regulate the content of the Twitter platform, according to four people familiar with the matter.

Musk has been told to hire more human auditors and fact-checkers to censor posts, these people said. Musk has laid off more than half of Twitter's 7500 employees, including all the trust and security teams in some offices, while looking for cheaper ways to monitor tweets.

Twitter currently uses a combination of human auditing and artificial intelligence technology to detect and review harmful content, just as other social media platforms do. Unlike Facebook and Instagram, however, Twitter doesn't hire fact-checkers.

Twitter also uses volunteer auditors to conduct content audits for a feature called "Community Notes" to respond to a flood of error messages on the platform, but the tool is not used to deal with illegal content.

Mr Musk told European Commission Commissioner Thierry Breton in January that he would rely more on his artificial intelligence process, according to people familiar with the matter. Bretton suggested that while Twitter itself should come up with the best way to regulate the site, he expected the company to hire more people to comply with the Digital Services Act (Digital Services Act,DSA), these people said.

"We intend to fully comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA) and have had several fruitful discussions with EU officials about our efforts in this regard," Twitter said in a statement to the Financial Times.

The company added: "We will continue to use a combination of technology and experts to proactively detect and delete illegal content, while community descriptions will enable people to learn more potential misinformation in an informative, transparent and trustworthy way."

According to CTOnews.com, DSA is landmark legislation that will force big technology groups to more actively monitor the illegal content of their websites. Major platforms, including Twitter, must fully comply by September at the latest. Violators will face fines of up to 6 per cent of global turnover. Musk told Bretton that recruitment would take time, but that staff would be in place this year to comply with DSA rules.
