Duan Xuru pointed out that the 'heavy nuclear fusion' described in the sci-fi movie wandering Earth 2 achieves the energy supply of planetary engines by burning rocks, according to the Global Times. " However, from the current engineering point of view, "heavy nuclear fusion" is not a key research direction for the time being, but the real world human use of light nuclear fusion to achieve the use of fusion energy is just around the corner.

In November 2022, the firewall, the core component of the world's largest "man-made sun", made great progress in China. The International Thermonuclear Experimental reactor (ITER) plans to enhance the heat load and complete the manufacture of the first wall, marking that China has achieved the global leadership in this core technology and greatly enhanced China's voice in this field. According to Duan Xuru, China's participation in the ITER project, on the one hand, contributes Chinese wisdom and strength to the ITER program, and on the other hand, it will greatly improve the level of nuclear fusion research in China.

At present, international fusion research is in the stage of research and development of deuterium-tritium combustion experiments and key nuclear engineering technologies of fusion reactors. Duan Xuru said that the next step of the "artificial Sun" project is to gradually transition from deuterium-tritium combustion experiments to fusion reactor engineering and physical experiments, and finally enter the stage of demonstration fusion power plants and commercial fusion substations to realize the peaceful use of fusion energy.

"if we rely on the basis of the existing nuclear science and technology industrial system, gather the relevant research units and enterprises with professional experience and technical basis in the field of nuclear engineering, and gradually build the technological development system and industrial system of fusion energy, we will concentrate our efforts on nuclear fusion engineering and tackling key technical problems in about 30 years, that is, by the middle of this century, we believe that human beings can use controllable nuclear fusion energy." Duan Xuru said.

The International Thermonuclear Experimental reactor (ITER) project is one of the largest and most far-reaching international scientific research cooperation projects in the world, which took about 10 years to build and cost US $5 billion (1998 value). The ITER device is a superconducting tokamak that can produce large-scale nuclear fusion reactions, commonly known as "artificial sun".
