CTOnews.com, March 8, CTOnews.com learned from the Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that at the end of February 2023, the 1m large field of view optical telescope (NOWT) of the Xinjiang Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered a near-Earth asteroid for the first time.

The International Asteroid Center recently issued a notice confirming that it was granted a temporary serial number 2023 DB2. This is the first near-Earth asteroid discovered by the Xinjiang Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

▲ 2023 DB2 Orbital Map | Source: the near-Earth asteroid of Xinjiang Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences is a very special kind of small solar system celestial body, with the closest distance to the sun no more than 1.3astronomical units. The Xinjiang Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said that after follow-up observations by many equipment around the world, it was confirmed that the absolute magnitude of 2023 DB2 was 21.76m, corresponding to a diameter of about 200m, which is about the size of two football fields. It takes 1.06years to orbit around the sun, but its closest distance to the earth's orbit is 30 million kilometers away, which is 80 times the distance between the earth and the moon, so it will not pose a threat to the earth.

According to reports, the NOWT for the discovery of near-Earth asteroids has the advantages of wide field of view, high pointing and tracking accuracy, and the main scientific research work is to carry out optical time-domain astronomical survey, and the time series observation data obtained are especially suitable for discovering asteroids and transient celestial bodies through in-depth excavation.
