According to the structure, CMOS sensors can be divided into front type (most traditional), backlight type and stack type. Stackable (also translated as stacked, stacked) is a further development on the basis of backlighting, and it is also the most advanced structure at present.

* Stack is a more advanced backlight sensor, so some manufacturers will call it "backlight stack" sensor.

* * Sony CMOS products are branded as Exmor, backlit as Exmor R and stackable as Exmor RS.

The main features of stackable CMOS include:

① realizes the layered placement of pixels and circuits, and the circuit layer replaces the substrate in the backlit CMOS.

The ② circuit part has more space, and more advanced manufacturing technology can be introduced to further expand the scale, thus enabling the whole CMOS to achieve higher performance.

In addition to the pixel layer and circuit layer, ③ can also add a cache layer (DRAM) to further improve the data transmission speed, or layer photodiodes and pixel transistors to further improve the imaging quality.

Because the ④ is stacked, the size of the entire CMOS module can be smaller.

To sum up, the stack structure is to make the sensor faster and smaller. High speed can not only improve focus and continuous shooting performance, but also provide more available electronic shutters (small distortion, small video jelly, flash synchronization); small size is beneficial to devices such as mobile phones, smartwatches, MR / AR glasses and so on.

▲ normal CMOS (left) and double transistor pixel stack CMOS (right)

The biggest disadvantage of stack sensors is the high cost (especially products with built-in DRAM). So since Sony RX100M4 and RX10M2 first introduced stackable CMOS in cameras in 2015, there are still a limited number of cameras with stackable sensors-even fewer interchangeable lenses that can be counted with two hands.

* in the new generation of mobile phones, most of the sensors are stacked. Most products mainly use small features, and the speed is not very fast.
