CTOnews.com March 8, Pimoroni's Inky Frame 4.0inch is a small, low-power e-paper display with a limited palette, five buttons for control, a microSD slot for storage and a raspberry pie Raspberry Pi Pico W development board at the core of the system.

Inky Frame 4.0in is designed to be used as a display for digital photo frames, digital signage, home automation systems or other applications, as well as for other DIY applications, but there are screen limitations.

The Inky Frame 4.0in product features a 4.01in, 640x400 pixel screen with an E Ink Gallery Pallette 4000 e-paper display and E Ink's Advanced Color ePaper (ACeP) color technology. This means that it can display seven colors: black, white, red, green, blue, yellow and orange.

But these displays are designed to display static images rather than full-motion images. It takes about 30 seconds to refresh the screen.

The advantage is that because the monitor consumes power only when the screen is refreshed, and because the rest of the components also consume very little power, users can get battery life for weeks or months using only battery power.

The Inky Frame 4.0inch product costs £70 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about RMB580), or users can pay £79 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about RMB655) for Inky Frame + accessory kits, including 16GB microSD cards, battery packs, micro USB cables and Velcro Cube installed battery packs.

Both the Inky Frame-only and Inky Frame + accessory kits come with two metal legs to support the display, while the Raspberry Pi Pico W development board is pre-welded in place, so there is no need to purchase separately.

Pimoroni has also launched a 5.7inch display that starts at £90 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about Rmb746).
