According to foreign media reports, Infineon announced on its website on Tuesday that they and UMC have reached a long-term strategic cooperation agreement to expand cooperation in the automotive microcontroller business.

Judging from the news announced by Infineon on its website, the cooperation between the two companies is still in the production of Infineon microcontrollers. After reaching a long-term strategic cooperation agreement with Lianhua Electronics, their production capacity will be doubled to better meet the growing market demand.

Under the new long-term strategic cooperation agreement, UMC will use the 40nm process to manufacture high-performance microcontroller products for Infineon at their fab in Singapore. Infineon's high-performance microcontrollers make use of their proprietary eNVM (embedded non-volatile memory) technology.

Microcontroller is the key component to control a variety of functions of the automobile. As the automobile is more environmentally friendly, safer and intelligent, the demand for microcontroller is also increasing greatly. This year, Infineon has increased the sales rate of automotive microcontrollers to nearly 1 million a day.

As for the new long-term strategic cooperation agreement, Rutger Wijburg, chief operating officer of Infineon, said that through the new strategic cooperation agreement, they ensured additional long-term capacity to serve customers in the fast-growing automotive market.

UMC executives also said they were glad that Infineon chose their factory in Singapore to produce automotive microcontrollers, and the new multi-year supply agreement will strengthen their long-term partnership with Infineon in automotive, artificial intelligence, Internet of things and other areas.
