Thank you, Mr. Air, a netizen of CTOnews.com, for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com, March 7 (Xinhua)-- US chip giant Qualcomm recently announced that it will lay off 79 employees at its headquarters in San Diego, USA, due to the downturn in the global smartphone market.

According to the San Diego United Tribune, Qualcomm submitted a layoff notice to the California government on February 28, saying that the layoffs would begin in April, Tuyuan Pixabay reported. The company said this was to "adjust business strategy and resource allocation" to respond to changes in the market. According to the notice, the latest round of layoffs affected all positions, but mainly focused on engineers, administrative and legal personnel.

CTOnews.com noted that the layoffs are based on the 153 layoffs that Qualcomm laid off in December. Even so, the company is the largest technology company in San Diego, with more than 12000 local employees.

In the latest earnings call in February, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said Qualcomm expects to reduce operating expenses by 5% amid the global economic slowdown and ballooning smartphone inventory.

As of September 25, Qualcomm employed 51000 full-time and part-time employees in 150 locations around the world. In its most recent fiscal year, Qualcomm added 6000 employees, including those added through acquisitions.

In recent years, Qualcomm has faced pressure from competitors and regulators. Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic and chip shortage, the global smartphone market has also declined. Global smartphone shipments in 2022 were 1.38 billion units, down 9% from a year earlier, according to market research firm Counterpoint Research.
