CTOnews.com, March 6-Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS) today announced the upcoming release of the IMX611 Image Sensor, a dToF SPAD depth of field sensor for smartphones that provides the industry's highest photon detection efficiency.
Sony says the IMX611 has a photon detection efficiency of 28%, thanks to its proprietary single-photon avalanche diode (single-photon avalanche diode,SPAD) pixel structure. This structure reduces the power consumption of the whole system and realizes the measurement of high-precision object distance.

According to the structure of the ▲ SPAD ToF depth of field sensor, the Sony IMX611, with a size of 8.1 inch and an effective pixel of 23000, will ship samples this month (March 2023) at a tax price of 1000 yen (currently about 51 yuan).
Sony said that in general, the SPAD can be used as a detector in the dToF sensor, which obtains distance information by detecting the flight time of the light emitted from the light source when it is reflected by the object.
IMX611 uses a proprietary SPAD pixel structure, so that the sensor has the highest photon detection efficiency in the industry, even very weak photons emitted from the light source and reflected from the object can be detected, thus achieving high-precision distance measurement. This also means that the sensor can provide high ranging performance even at a lower light source laser output, which helps to reduce the power consumption of the entire smartphone system.
The ▲ test demonstration Sony also said that the sensor can accurately measure the distance of an object, thus improving autofocus performance in low-light environments with poor visibility, applying scatter effect to the main background, and seamlessly switching between wide-angle and telephoto cameras. All of these features will improve the user experience of smartphone cameras. The sensor also supports 3D space recognition, AR occlusion, motion capture / gesture recognition and other functions. With the popularity of the virtual world in the future, the sensor will contribute to the functional evolution of VR head-mounted displays and AR glasses, and these requirements are expected to increase.
