Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, March 6, according to Pulsenews, industry insiders have revealed that Samsung Electronics is preparing to develop its own CPU core for smartphones and personal computers in order to reduce its dependence on British chip designer ARM and improve the optimization of its devices.
Samsung Electronics recently formed an internal team dedicated to the core development of CPU, led by a senior developer who was in charge of CPU development at AMD, several industry insiders said on Sunday.
CPU is a key component of data computing and an important part of the application processor (AP) that represents the "brain" of smartphones. Samsung Electronics has been relying on the CPU core provided by ARM to make its own AP chip Exynos. Samsung Electronics competitor Qualcomm also designs and manufactures AP chips based on ARM. If it successfully develops its own CPU core, it will help Samsung significantly improve the optimization of its smartphones.
Samsung Electronics is also speeding up the development of the next generation of AP chips, such as chips specially designed for the flagship Galaxy series, the report said. Its system LSI business unit set up an AP solution development team at the end of last year to work with the Mobile experience (MX) business unit to promote the next generation of advanced research and AP optimization.
According to industry insiders, the first chip launched by the above team is called Galaxy Chip and may be available in 2025. However, the chip is likely to use a CPU core based on ARM technology, as Samsung Electronics has just launched its own CPU core development project.
"if Samsung Electronics succeeds in developing its own CPU core, it will help improve the competitiveness of its Galaxy Chip," said one industry insider who spoke on condition of anonymity. "if the development goes according to plan, Samsung may achieve its own CPU core by 2027."
This is not the first time Samsung Electronics has tried to develop its own CPU core. As early as the early 2010s, the company invested in technology research and development and formed a team to gain its own design capabilities. However, Samsung Electronics later terminated the program, arguing that its mobile CPU core is not as efficient as other products such as Qualcomm in terms of multi-core and power efficiency. In 2019, Samsung Electronics laid off about 300 developers at the Austin Research Center in Texas.
At present, the high-end mobile AP market is dominated by Qualcomm, while the low-end market is occupied by MediaTek.
As of CTOnews.com 's release, Samsung has not officially responded to this.
