It is reported that the camera was released in May 2019 and was considered a revolutionary product at the time. The camera is equipped with a 12 megapixel mid-frame sensor with a backlight size of 43.8mm × 32.9mm, which is about 1.7 times larger than the 35mm full-frame sensor.

Fuji GFX100 uses a "backlight sensor" with phase difference pixels embedded, and its autofocus speed is twice as fast as that of the previous GFX model. Both moving object tracking AF and continuous AF are supported. The GFX100 has in-machine image anti-shake (IBIS) optical anti-shake technology, providing up to 5.5x "five-axis image anti-shake".

GFX100 is Fuji's first non-inverted digital camera with integrated vertical handle design, which is convenient for vertical shooting. In addition, Fuji GFX100 supports 4K30p video recording, H.265 / HEVC codec and HDR video recording.

The camera has multiple displays, a 5.76 megapixel EVF electronic viewfinder with a 100% field of view and a 2.36 megapixel three-way folded 3.2in LCD display. The top panel of the GFX100 has a 1.8-inch shoulder screen and the rear panel has a 2.05-inch display.
