On Friday, Mercedes-Benz broke ground on a battery recycling plant in Kuppenheim, southern Germany.

Pixabay is reported to have an annual recycling capacity of 2500 tons, providing more than 50,000 battery packs for Mercedes-Benz's new electric vehicles.

Reclaimed batteries will come from test vehicles and car starter batteries. The plant plans to build on the success of the pilot to expand production in the medium and long term.

After negotiations with local public authorities, the pilot plant will be completed in a few months. The first phase of the factory is to mechanically disassemble batteries, and the relevant production line is scheduled to start trial operation in December this year.

The plant in Kubenheim will use solar energy and green electricity to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations. The plant construction is also part of a scientific research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection.

Jörg Burzer, member of the Mercedes-Benz Production and Supply Chain Management Board, said: "We are sending an important signal in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, demonstrating the company's innovative strength in sustainable electric vehicles. "

Thekla Walker, Minister of Environment, Climate and Energy of Baden-Württemberg, said she was pleased that Mercedes-Benz had promoted the circular economy.

"This is particularly important given the limited availability of important raw materials such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, which are in high demand," she said. "
