CTOnews.com, March 6 (Xinhua)-- according to Games Wirtschaft, the Austrian Hermagor District Court ruled that Ultimate Team unpacking / drawing cards in "FIFA" was a gamble and ordered Sony to refund hundreds of euros that a player had recharged on PlayStation.

The lawyer representing the player who filed the lawsuit said the case made him aware of how "addictive" this form of in-game purchase is, and criticized the out-of-the-box model for allowing customers to "burst into dopamine" when buying.

The lawsuit points out that plaintiffs, including a minor, spent hundreds of euros on the ball simulator to "gamble". Lawyer Ulrich Salburg claimed that the setting of spending money on FIFA's random unpacking system violated the country's gambling law.

The Austrian Hermagor District Court also ruled that Sony needed permission to profit from the "FIFA" package, although the decision was not yet legally binding. Although Sony has been ordered to return 338.26 euros, the company has not yet responded to this, but CTOnews.com believes that Sony will most likely appeal.

According to the court, since the value of the items in the FIFA box may be higher or lower than that of the booty box itself, it is theoretically an "economic profit" for those lucky enough to have access to valuables, thus violating the Austrian gaming law.

Because the box in the game is created by the developer, the prize violates fair business law because there is no competition.

In FIFA, players form their "ultimate team" (Ultimate Team) by obtaining representative player cards, including contemporary and legendary footballers. One way is to buy a card bag, the value of which ranges from £1.99 to £30 + for the most basic card bag.

But the problem lies in the card-drawing itself. The court held that because players are likely to fail to get what they want, this will encourage players to open the box / draw cards indefinitely in order to get what they want.

At present, the setting of unpacking / drawing cards has been removed in areas such as the Benelux Economic Union because of similar laws, but most areas remain unchanged. EA said earlier this year that FIFA 23 was "striving to become the largest title in franchise history".
