Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, March 4 (Xinhua)-- in September last year, a new EU energy efficiency regulation alarmed the entire 8K industry, which set the power consumption limit for 8K TVs (and microLED-based displays) so low that none of the 8K TVs on the market can meet this standard, meaning these devices cannot be sold in the EU.

In response to the new rules that came into effect on March 1, Samsung has come up with a trick to turn on Eco mode for its 8K televisions by default, Forbes reported. In this mode, the brightness and image quality of Samsung 8K TVs will be greatly reduced, thus keeping power consumption within compliance and selling smoothly in the European Union. Of course, users can change to normal luminance mode through some options.

As previously reported by CTOnews.com, in March 2019, the regulation stipulated that the energy efficiency index (EEI) of 8K TVs and microLED-based displays should not exceed 0.9, the same as that of 4K TVs. The Energy efficiency Index is a figure based on screen area and power consumption, and the 8k Association has confirmed that no 8K TV can achieve this level of energy efficiency, so it will be banned from selling in the EU market.
