Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

According to relevant data on March 4, Chinese electric car manufacturers far outsell foreign electric vehicle brands in the domestic market, which means they have successfully surpassed their foreign competitors in the domestic market. Encouraged by this, with car exports surging in the Chinese market, Chinese electric carmakers such as BYD have made great strides into overseas markets, targeting buyers in all parts of the world, from Europe to Australia.

Led by BYD, Chinese electric carmakers have launched more than a dozen electric vehicle models in at least 16 countries in the past two years, covering most of the major economies of northern and western Europe.

Last year, BYD was the world's second-largest seller of pure electric cars after Tesla. The company has ordered at least two car carriers to export its electric vehicles. BYD also plans to launch more models in markets such as Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Belgium this year. Some overseas dealers and buyers say they are attracted by the price, innovative features and delivery speed of Chinese-branded electric cars.

Chinese electric cars already dominate the domestic market and may now pose a greater challenge to Japanese and European competitors in developed markets than relatively cheap Chinese gasoline-powered cars. At present, China's gasoline-powered cars are mainly sold in other parts of Asia and South America.

As the world's well-known automakers are accelerating the development of their own electric vehicles and many other reasons, so far, the number of Chinese brand electric vehicles exported to the European market is still very small, and they are also facing tremendous competitive pressure from overseas manufacturers.

Weilai has said that its electric cars will be available in the United States in 2025. Other Chinese car brands have not announced plans to enter the US market.

Nearly 80 per cent of electric cars sold in China in 2022 are made by Chinese carmakers, Tesla electric vehicles account for about 15 per cent, and the rest are electric vehicles jointly produced by other foreign brands.

All electric car manufacturers in the Chinese market have benefited from the subsidies and preferential policies of the past decade. The production cost and price of electric vehicles are decreasing continuously, and the electric vehicle technology of Chinese enterprises is also in a leading position.

In addition to BYD, other brands that have begun to export electric vehicles include Chinese electric car start-ups Lulai Motor and Xiaopeng Motor, which are listed on the US stock market, and the domestic brand Red Flag.

These brands continue to launch new models with upgraded products and various functions to meet the demand of China's fast-growing electric vehicle market. They can also expand rapidly in a short period of time. Last year, at least a dozen Chinese automakers produced more than 100000 pure electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Last August, Hedin Mobility Group AB, a German company that is one of Europe's largest dealers, signed an agreement with BYD to distribute three BYD models in the German market. Lars Pauly, chief executive of Hedin's electric vehicles division, said dealers wanted carmakers to provide high-quality products and continue to supply them in large quantities.

"We have made a clear decision that BYD may be the most successful Chinese brand," Polly said. " In 2022, BYD delivered nearly 1.9 million pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles worldwide, with the highest sales in China. Last year, BYD exported nearly 56000 cars.

Andreas Andreas Knipp, who sells BYD electric cars at Senger Group, another German dealer, said BYD's electric cars are all in stock and are on their way to European ports when customers place orders, while electric cars made by local European manufacturers usually take six months to two years to deliver to customers.

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids accounted for about 1/3 of China's total car exports last year and were also the fastest-growing part, according to Bernstein, a market research firm. According to the China passenger car Association, this figure increased by 89% over 2021, while the export of gasoline-powered cars increased by 50%.

At present, the companies that export more Chinese-made electric cars to overseas markets are Tesla and the British brand name. Mingjue is now owned by SAIC.

But gasoline-powered cars are still the largest component of China's total car exports. According to the relevant Automobile Association, China exported about 2.67 million passenger cars last year, on a par with Germany's, but still lagging behind Japan.

Australia's Eddie Polopat (Eddy Poropat) commutes between Sydney and Canberra, a total of nearly 200miles. Although he has two Land Rovers at home, Boropat bought a BYD Atto 3 compact SUV last year because he thought the local oil price was too high.

Mr. Boropat said that when he decided to buy an electric car, he learned that he would have to wait eight months to get the Tesla Model 3, but BYD's delivery was faster and cost $23000 less (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 159000 yuan).

"in terms of the money I paid, it's a great car," said the IT industry executive. He praised BYD for its good driving experience and handling performance.

BYD's main export model, the Atto 3, is priced at $40,000 (CTOnews.com note: about 276000 yuan) to $43000 (CTOnews.com note: about 297000 yuan) after a government tax rebate in Germany, twice the price in China. Although the electric car is one of the cheapest models in the Chinese market, German dealer Senger Group's Knip says it is still positioned locally as a "price-friendly high-end" model in Germany.

Chinese brands accounted for about 5 per cent of the European electric car market last year and could reach 15 per cent by 2025, according to Fitch Solutions, the market consultancy. According to market research firm Jato Dynamics, the best-selling electric car brands in Europe are Tesla and Volkswagen.

By 2025, Chinese automakers are expected to produce millions more vehicles than they sold at home, prompting them to sell more cars to overseas markets, Bernstein analysts said.

In Norway, eight out of every 10 cars sold in 2022 were electric vehicles, and a total of nearly 7000 electric vehicles were registered locally by the five Chinese carmakers last year, accounting for about 5 per cent of Norwegian electric vehicle registrations. but it still lags far behind Tesla, the most popular electric car brand. Last year, Tesla registered 22000 electric cars in Norway.

Kjetil Dypaune, a store manager who lives near Oslo, Norway, has repeatedly considered several brands of electric cars. He wants to buy a bigger car and is going to take his family dog on a long road trip.

After test-driving various brands of electric cars, including Volkswagen, Tesla and Red Flag, he finally chose the ES8, a seven-seater SUV that costs about 2/3 of the price of a similar configuration, Tesla Model X.

He likes the battery rental scheme for Lulai cars, which doesn't have to pay for batteries. That way, Dipani can rent the car for $200 a month (CTOnews.com Note: about 1382 yuan), replace dead batteries at the charging stations of Lulai cars, or upgrade them later. However, Xilai currently has only three charging stations in Norway, down from the planned 20.
