CTOnews.com March 3, the European Union recently amended the Digital Market Act (Digital Markets Act) to force tech giants, including Apple, to open their messaging platforms. This means that Europe will force Apple's iMessage to provide cross-platform communications.

The European Council approved the Digital Markets Act in July 2022 and will enter into force on May 2, 2023, including several provisions aimed at preventing large technology companies from dominating the market and harming their competitors.

The most important change in the recent revision of the European Union is to require Apple to open up the iMessage. IMessage is an important selling point in Apple's iPhone ecology, especially among young people in the United States.

The bill revised by EU agencies requires that messaging services such as iMessage, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp be open to enable interoperability of messaging platforms, allowing users to exchange messages, send files or make video calls across messaging applications.

CTOnews.com has previously reported that Apple engineers believe the change could undermine the end-to-end encryption and other privacy features provided by iMessage. Apple said it was not considering integrating RCS, a messaging protocol that Google and other companies are pushing for.
