This is the first loss for Samsung's semiconductor division since its launch in the fourth quarter of 2008. "there is still a contract manufacturing business in Samsung's semiconductor division that is profitable, but it cannot reduce the huge losses in the memory business," the source said. The device Solutions (DS) division has lost at least 2 trillion won (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 10.54 billion yuan).

The DS division has been Samsung's main source of profits, but the sharp fall in semiconductor prices at the end of last year hit the company hard. In addition, businesses including smartphones, consumer electronics and displays have also declined to varying degrees.

Samsung's operating profit in the fourth quarter was just 270 billion won, down 97% from a year earlier. Samsung Electronics has borrowed 20 trillion won ($16 billion) from its Samsung display (Samsung Display) to continue to boost its semiconductor business.
