CTOnews.com, March 2 (Xinhua)-- Market research firm IDC has revised its previous forecast for global smartphone shipments, saying that the market recovery cycle is longer than previously expected.

IDC estimates that global smartphone shipments will be 1.19 billion units in 2023, down 1.1% from a year earlier. IDC had previously estimated that global smartphone shipments would grow by 2.8 per cent in 2023. IDC believes that the smartphone market will not really recover until 2024.

Nabila Popal, director of research for IDC mobile and consumer device trackers, commented as follows:

As costs rise and consumer demand continues to challenge, OEM manufacturers remain cautious about shipments in 2023. There is still a lot of uncertainty and lack of trust in the smartphone industry, which leads to cautious prospects.

IDC believes that once we overcome these short-term challenges, the global market will return to growth in 2024. The consumer renewal cycle in developed markets is suppressed, and smartphones have room for long-term growth in emerging markets.

The percentage decline in shipments of Android devices this year is expected to be even greater than that of iOS devices. Shipments of Android devices will fall 1.2 per cent, while shipments of iOS devices will fall 0.5 per cent, IDC said.
