Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com reported on March 2 that MWC 2023 was held in Barcelona, Spain, from February 27 to March 2. During this period, MediaTek demonstrated 3GPP 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) technology to provide two-way satellite communication application support for smartphones.

▲ Picture Source: MediaTek said that the first batch of smartphones using MediaTek satellite communications technology will also be launched, and more devices will be unveiled this year. In addition, MediaTek will share the next generation of 5G non-terrestrial network technology to meet the new devices that support satellite communications in the future.

CTOnews.com learned from MediaTek officials that MediaTek's independent chipset MT6825 based on the 3GPP NTN standard can be integrated into its flagship smartphone to provide a satellite communications experience. In the next few years, MediaTek's satellite communications portfolio will develop IoT-NTN and NR-NTN technologies based on the 3GPP 5G R17 standard. MediaTek's upcoming NR-NTN chipset will provide higher connection rates for devices and are suitable for applications such as navigation and real-time communications.

According to reports, the IoT-NTN solution uses an independent chipset design, making it easy for equipment manufacturers to integrate two-way satellite communication technology into 5G and 4G devices such as smartphones. Unlike other non-standardized solutions, MediaTek adopts the 3GPP R17 NTN open standard, which eliminates the need for OEM vendors or operators to develop products for specific single specifications.

In addition to supporting the 3GPP R17 NTN standard, MediaTek said the MT6825 IoT-NTN chipset includes a number of other functions: it can connect geosynchronous orbit (GEO) satellites for easy conversion to 3GPP NTN standard satellite networks; allow devices to automatically receive information from satellites; power devices with longer battery life; and highly integrated design helps speed up the product time-to-market process.
