CTOnews.com March 1 news: eSIM has been around for a long time, and many smartwatches already support eSIM. But the processing and management of eSIM is very different on Android devices, and there is still no easy way to manage and switch between phones. Google plans to use a new tool to change that later this year.

Google announced at the MWC 2023 event that it will bring eSIM switching tool to Android later this year. It will be equipped with an updated version of Android (expected to be Android 14), which will be released in the fourth quarter of 2023. This feature is based on standards developed by GSMA and allows users to easily and safely transfer eSIM from one device to another.

Google announced that Deutsche Telekom will be the first operator to adopt Android's eSIM handoff mechanism, meaning users do not have to register for a new eSIM and wait hours for activation each time they change a device. Apple already offers eSIM card transfer services between iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.

Once this feature is rolled out around the world and all operators start to support it, it is expected that more smartphones will abandon physical SIM card slots. Apple already sells iPhone 14 series phones without any physical SIM card slots in the United States.
