CTOnews.com March 1 news, in early February Chrome browser pushed a new version number 110. This version of Chrome adds support for NVIDIA's RTX Video Super Resolution technology. However, it did not start at that time and required a new graphics driver to work properly. And just tonight, NVIDIA updated the new Game Ready driver version 531.14, officially providing VSR technology support for Chrome and Edge browsers, you can go to GeForce Experience or NVIDIA official website update.

RTX Video Super Resolution is RTX Video Super Resolution technology. It can upgrade online 1080P video to 4K resolution at most through GPU AI calculation, achieving the effect of improving resolution, which is a bit like DLSS technology in games.

RTX video super-resolution is very simple to use, as long as the RTX 30 series/ 40 series driver update to 531.14 version above, and Chrome / Edge browser update to the latest version can be enabled. Enable path is: NVIDIA Control Panel--Video--Adjust video image settings. There are four gear options under this option box. The higher the gear, the more obvious the super-resolution effect, but it also consumes more GPU resources. In addition, the laptop must be plugged in before it can be turned on, because this feature requires high-intensity AI calculations, which will affect battery life.

Let's see how it works. It currently supports a number of foreign video platforms (Youtube, Twitch, Netflix, Hulu and Disney+) as well as domestic mainstream video platforms (Beep, Douyu and Tiger Teeth). In the following test, if the resolution is set to 480P, the effect of super-resolution is quite obvious. From the leftmost native 480P resolution super-sub, the rear 1-4 can be seen more clearly, the actual appearance is comparable to 1080P.

If the native resolution is set to 1080P, then there will be a perception close to 4K after super-division. The improvement is not as noticeable as the 480P, probably because the visual perception follows a diminishing marginal effect.

From our experience, RTX video super-resolution technology can combine NVIDIA Tensor Core with the most advanced AI image processing technology to intelligently sharpen and enhance features and edges while eliminating annoying compression artifacts. From another point of view, this technology can also save traffic costs for everyone, as long as the load 480P can enjoy the original 1080P picture quality.

Because RTX video super-resolution is built on AI computing, it requires high-performance RTX 30/40 series GPU support. While video playback affects computer performance, this technique is performed after video decoding and does not burden a separate video codec unit. But it takes up some GPU resources for AI computing, so if you want to play games that use more than 90% of the graphics card while watching video using RTX video super-resolution technology, you may feel stuck or dropped frames. It is recommended to lower VSR gear to 1st gear.

↑ VSR 4 GPU usage 26% when playing video

↑ 13% GPU usage for video playback in VSR 1

To sum up, NVIDIA's RTX video super-resolution is a new attempt at AI application. There have also been some vendors that have released VSR technology based on graphics drivers before, but RTX video super resolution is significantly different from them. It is AI-based and can intelligently optimize and scale video images, much like DLSS technology in games. The VSR technology of other manufacturers is based on SSAA (super sampling anti-aliasing), which can only render and zoom the game screen at high resolution, both of which can improve the picture quality, but the applicable scenes are different, and the effect is also significantly different. If you want to experience it, update your RTX 30/40 series GPU to the latest version of the driver and Chrome / Edge browser to the latest version to start experiencing it!
