CTOnews.com, February 28, Qualcomm and Therese announced that they have completed the world's first commercially deployable iSIM card (integrated SIM card) authentication on the second generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, enabling SIM card functionality to be realized through the main processor of the smartphone.

Qualcomm said that GSMA's security certification ensures that iSIM cards can support the same high standards of network protection and flexible connections "anytime, anywhere" as the latest generation of eSIM cards (embedded SIM cards). The new iSIM card now helps terminal manufacturers maintain industry-leading security levels while further saving space and reducing manufacturing and supply chain costs.

According to reports, the iSIM card fully conforms to the GSMA remote SIM card configuration specification, and can remotely manage iSIM card function subscriptions through any standard platform.

As previously reported by CTOnews.com, Qualcomm demonstrated its first iSIM smartphone in the world in early 2022, using a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G with a Snapdragon 888 5G chip. A year later, the iSIM card successfully obtained the commercial deployment certification of GSMA.

ISIM allows for increased memory capacity, enhanced performance, and higher system integration. Previous eSIM cards require separate chips, but with the introduction of iSIM cards, separate chips are no longer needed, eliminating the proprietary space allocated to SIM services and directly embedded in the device's application processor.

According to Kaleido Intelligence's research, the market share of iSIM cards will grow to 300 million by 2027, accounting for 19% of all eSIM card shipments.
