CTOnews.com, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) BMW Group on Monday set up a pilot fleet of hydrogen vehicles to launch large-scale road tests in 2023, and the chief executive of the German auto giant called hydrogen "a missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle of emissions-free transportation."

The BMW iX5 hydrogen car, which uses fuel cells from Toyota and has a top speed of more than 112mph (CTOnews.com Note: about 180.25 km / h), is being assembled at a factory in Munich.

The car stores hydrogen in two tanks and can be filled in three to four minutes. BMW says it has a range of 313 miles under WLTP conditions (CTOnews.com Note: about 503.72 kilometers).

BMW officials said that for the road test, BMW officially provided nearly 100 iX5 Hydrogen models, which will be "used for demonstration and testing of various target groups around the world."

In a statement, Oliver Zipse, chairman of BMW, said hydrogen is "a multi-functional energy and plays a key role in energy transformation, so it also plays a key role in climate protection." Hydrogen is "one of the most effective ways to store and transport renewable energy, and we should use this potential to accelerate the transformation of transportation," he said. Hydrogen is the missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle in the field of non-emission transportation. A single technology alone will not be enough to achieve climate-neutral traffic on a global scale.

BMW is one of several car companies bullish on the potential of hydrogen fuel cells, including Toyota and Hyundai, but Tesla CEO Musk is not optimistic about this kind of energy, saying on Twitter that "fuel cells are stupid sales" and "stupid sales of hydrogen are meaningless", describing it as "the stupidest energy storage I can imagine."
