With the release of the new processor, overclocking enthusiast SkatterBencher released a video about overclocking in Ryzen 9 7950X3D, while der8auer went to great lengths to introduce the Zen4 desktop CPU with 3D V-Cache.

Similar to last year's 5800X3D, the overclocking function of these processors is locked, at least you can't do it the traditional way, which means you won't see the Ryzen 7000X3D's "X GHz" setting in the motherboard menu at all.

For Ryzen 7950X3D to perform best, users must rely on Precision Boost Overdrive 2 or EXPO (memory overclocking profile), but these technologies are also difficult to achieve satisfactory results for overclocking enthusiasts.

SkatterBencher explains in detail every possible overclocking strategy, focusing on unlocking more performance potential of Ryzen X3D.

He explained that there are differences between the two Raphael chips (small chips) in the new Ryzen 9 X3D package, where the maximum frequency limit of the CCD0 (with 3D V-Cache) is 5250 MHz and the voltage lower limit is 1.2 V, while the CCD1 (without 3D V-Cache) can reach up to 5750 MHz and 1.4 V.

By contrast, the original 7950X SKU has only one Fmax limit, 5850 MHz and 1.475V.

When PBO2 and voltage / frequency curve optimizer are enabled, overclocking can force the CPU to a higher frequency, but this takes a lot of time to try and constantly fine-tune, and this strategy can increase its Fmax frequency to 5900 MHz. However, there is actually a better way to take advantage of the ECLK feature available in Raphael to overclock.

SkatterBencher explained that Raphael ECLK (external clock generator) can be used with Ryzen CPU and push it to a higher frequency. In short, he increased the voltage-frequency-temperature from 5.0 GHz / 1.1 V / 50 °C to 5.25 GHz at the same voltage and temperature by changing ECLK to 105 GHz.

In other words, the Ryzen 7000X3D series, similar to the previous generation of 5800X3D, can be overclocked through ECLK, but this requires a little manual adjustment by the user, which may be complicated for some users. In addition, the overclocking range will also vary according to the heat dissipation scheme, the motherboard and the constitution of each processor. It is worth mentioning that although overclocking can lead to higher running scores, it may not necessarily achieve a significant increase in the number of game frames, such as the following figure. His overclocking method can improve CPU performance by 9%, but it brings little performance improvement to the game.

Of course, this series of processors may not have as much game performance as the leading competitors, but it is indeed cheaper than the competition. For example, the i9-13900KS currently costs 5799 yuan (5999 yuan the other day), but the cheaper R9 7950X3D can easily achieve higher game performance and lower power consumption.

In addition, a big aspect of the new 7000X3D is the energy consumption ratio, at least 7950X3D completely crushes 13900K and KS in terms of efficiency.

According to ComputerBase in Germany, the average power consumption of the 7950X3D is almost half that of 13900K, about 70-80 watts, but the 13th generation of Core i9 can exceed 150W. In addition, the X3D model uses less power than AMD's own non-3D V-cache SKU.
