CTOnews.com news on February 27, Qualcomm announced some news about Snapdragon Satellite satellite communications during the MWC2023. Xiaomi, OPPO, Glory and so on became the first batch of manufacturers to support the plan. Qualcomm announced Snapdragon Satellite for the first time in January this year.

At MWC 2023, Qualcomm announced a partnership with a number of Android OEM vendors to apply Snapdragon Satellite to future smartphones, including Motorola, Nothing, Xiaomi, vivo, OPPO and Glory.

"by bringing Snapdragon Satellite into the next-generation terminal, our partners will be able to provide satellite information transmission, thanks to a mature and commercial global low-Earth orbit constellation that allows users around the world to communicate outdoors with emergency service providers, as well as family and friends," said Francesco Grilli, vice president of product management at Qualcomm.

According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon Satellite is the world's first satellite-based solution to provide two-way messaging for flagship smartphones. Snapdragon Satellite uses mobile messaging services around the world to provide global connectivity, and CTOnews.com has learned that this technology will be the first to be used in terminals equipped with the second-generation Snapdragon 8 flagship mobile platform, but the company also said that the technology will be extended to its lower-level chips and second-generation Snapdragon 5G modems and RF systems.

With the support of Snapdragon 5G modems and RF systems and the fully operational Iridium satellite constellation system, Snapdragon Satellite will support OEM vendors and other service providers to bring true global coverage. For smartphone solutions, Iridium Communications uses the weather resilient L-band spectrum to achieve uplink and downlink connections.

Qualcomm did not disclose when Android phones with the feature will be launched today, but Qualcomm said earlier this year that some Android phones will have these features by the second half of this year.
