CTOnews.com, Feb. 27 (Reuters)-the Australian government announced on Monday that it would overhaul its cyber security rules and set up an agency to monitor government investment in this area and help coordinate response to hacker attacks. Since the end of last year, at least eight companies, such as telecom company Optus, have reported cyber attacks.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said at a meeting with industry leaders and experts that current cyber security rules, government policies and regulations are "not at all the level we need".

According to Tuyuan Pixabay, the Australian government will set up a cyber security coordination department, supported by a national office of the Ministry of the Interior, whose task is to ensure that government agencies work together during cyber events. The government has released a discussion paper on the new cyber security strategy, which is scheduled to be implemented next year, and is seeking feedback on how companies can work with the government to improve cyber security.

Interior Minister Claire Clare O'Neil said that while key security measures are being taken by the government and the private sector, the current rules do not ensure smooth coordination during cyber events.

CTOnews.com reported last year that Telstra, Australia's largest telecoms company, suffered a small data breach last year, while Telstra's main competitor, Optus, suffered a massive cyber attack in October.

As a result, Optus, Australia's second-largest operator, has been contacting customers to inform them that their data has been compromised, including the personal information of at least 10 million customers, affecting about 40 per cent of the country's 25.9 million people.
