CTOnews.com, February 26 (Xinhua) according to a new report released by intellectual property law firm Mathys & Squire, Chinese companies filed more than half of the world's semiconductor-related patents in 2022.

According to the report, the number of global semiconductor patent applications reached a record 69190 in 2022, up 9 per cent from 62770 in 2020. In terms of patent sources, China has applied for 37865 semiconductor patents, accounting for 55% of the global total, far ahead of other countries. The United States ranked second with 18223 patent applications (26% of the total). The UK accounts for only 0.26 per cent of global semiconductor patent applications, which is very limited.

CTOnews.com noted that the report also pointed out that the largest applicant in 2022 was semiconductor giant TSMC, which filed 4793 patents, accounting for 7 per cent of the global total. The largest semiconductor patent applicant in the United States is California-based Applied Materials Company, with 209 patent applications, followed by Sandisk (50) and IBM (49).

The report points out that continued R & D spending in the semiconductor industry has driven the growth of technology, and fierce competition in the industry ensures that innovation continues to advance at a very rapid pace. The value of the global semiconductor industry is expected to increase from $590 billion in 2021 to $1 trillion by 2030. Of these, the automotive industry will account for 15 per cent of global demand for semiconductors, up from 8 per cent in 2021. At the same time, the "Internet of things" is another key area of growth, including everything from wearable technology to smart homes and even smart cities.
