Foreign media AndroidAuthority has launched the Motorola vertical scroll screen concept phone, which is about to be unveiled in MWC 2023, which is called Motorola rizr, which was shown on Lenovo Tech World 22 in October last year.

On MWC2023, AndroidAuthority got a prototype of Motorola's rizr scroll screen phone, which said that in most cases, scroll screen phones are more practical than foldable phones, and when you need more screen space, you can roll out in an instant to get a larger display, which can be neatly put away after use.

Motorola chose a smaller form factor for its rizr scrollable phone. In an unexpanded state, the phone uses a 5-inch 15:9 POLED display provided by BOE display.

The display surrounds the bottom of the rizr, covering about 1/3 of the rear. Just double-click the power button on the side and the electric system starts to work, scrolling the display up until most of the back panel reaches the front of the phone. This takes about three seconds and expands the display to 6.5in at 22:9. The system interface is adjusted, the application stretches vertically, the icons are rearranged on the home screen, and Motorola is making special wallpaper to automatically adapt to the deformation of the screen.

The main disadvantage of rizr is its thickness and weight. Despite its small height and width, it is still quite thick and weighs 210g, heavier than many flagship aircraft such as the Pixel 7 Pro and the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Motorola rizr has some interesting uses. First, in some cases, the display can be set to expand automatically (without double clicking). For example, when you watch a video and switch the phone to landscape mode, the display will automatically start scrolling, creating more screen space. Or, if you want to enter an email, it scrolls automatically and has more typing space.

When the phone is facing down and the display screen is not expanded, the part of the screen around the back can act as a back display screen, which can display notifications or can be set to constant display mode, showing date, time and weather.

The coolest use case is the camera application. When taking a photo, you can activate the back screen by clicking a button, and then show your subject a preview of their photo or a cute smiley face animation.

In addition to all the complexities of a folding machine, the Motorola rizr must have a tiny, power-efficient, reliable electric system built in to make the screen scroll. Currently, Motorola's rizr concept phone has a built-in 3000mAh battery, which may be enough for a smaller 5-inch display, but not enough for an extended 6.5in mode, let alone if you scroll the screen several times a day.

Firmness and durability are also a big problem, and the Motorola rizr prototype has been wrapped in a transparent plastic case, which may be necessary, because without the plastic case, the bottom of the display will be completely exposed, which means that if you accidentally fall to the ground, if the bottom of the screen hits the ground, it is likely to break the screen.

Motorola says the scroll screen concept phone is a project of its 312 laboratory division. It is not clear whether the phone will be mass-produced, and CTOnews.com will keep an eye on it.
