CTOnews.com, February 25, China Unicom announced that it will launch the world's first "5G Redcap commercial module" at the MWC 2023 5G innovation conference in Barcelona. The specific time will be 17:55 on February 27, 2023.

RedCap (CTOnews.com Note: all referred to as Reduced Capability) is a key 5G new technology in the 3GPP R17 phase. By simplifying the number of terminal antennas and reducing the transceiver bandwidth, RedCap greatly reduces the cost and size, and achieves the best balance between performance and cost. Compared with 4G RedCap, it has better performance and supports 5G native capabilities such as network slicing, low delay, high reliability and large capacity, which will fill the gap in the low-cost, medium-speed and high-speed 5G market.

In January this year, China Unicom 5G RedCap White Paper was released, which aims to provide product research and development guidance and technical basis for industrial partners, and promote RedCap to accelerate commercial use, which is a key milestone in the development of RedCap industry. The white paper makes an in-depth analysis of the development requirements of the RedCap industry, formulates the basic communication functions and enhanced function requirements of RedCap products, puts forward the product capability combination according to the industry characteristics, and defines the specific requirements from the perspective of modules and end products.

In terms of technical requirements, the white paper defines the basic communication requirements that need to support 4G / 5G dual mode, NR TDD / FDD multi-band and MIMO peak rate, puts forward RedCap enhancement requirements that support slicing, 5G LAN, high precision timing and uRLLC, and identifies and recommends the selection of enhancement technologies for different industry application scenarios. It shows the deep accumulation of the first brand of China Unicom "5G + Industrial Internet".

In terms of module and terminal requirements, the white paper not only clearly describes the requirements of RedCap module from the dimensions of components, package, size, interface, power consumption and platform support, but also defines the differentiated application scenarios and requirements of different industries such as industrial control, power, video surveillance, smart car couplings and smart wear. DTU, CPE, industrial gateway, electric power communication warehouse, indoor and outdoor cameras, vehicle terminals, wearable devices and other terminal product forms and support functions are designed to meet the needs of the industry. It points out a clear direction for the rapid enrichment and maturity of RedCap industrial ecology.

In terms of ecological certification, China Unicom has built 5G OPENLAB to verify RedCap technology, and plans to take the lead in upgrading the end-to-end support RedCap test network, and launch a certification system for RedCap modules / terminals, so as to provide partners with RedCap series products with Unicom's "end-to-network collaboration" characteristics.
