CTOnews.com February 25, Tianfeng Securities analyst Guo Mingyi said in a series of tweets today that Sony will replace Lumentum and WIN Semi as the exclusive lidar (LiDAR) sensor supplier for Apple's two flagship models, the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The official tweet of Guo Mingyi attached to CTOnews.com reads as follows:

Sony will replace Lumentum (Design) / Shengmao (production) as the exclusive ToF VCSEL supplier of iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Lumentum / Shimao will face long-term structural risks in the VCSEL market.

1. The key to the design of Sony ToF VCSEL scheme is to integrate VCSEL and Driver IC, which can reduce power consumption (beneficial to battery life) or provide better ToF performance under the same power consumption (beneficial to photography and potential AR applications).

2. The market share of Lumentum / stable Mao in iPhone Face ID VCSEL will decline from about 50% of iPhone 14 series to 30-40% of iPhone 15 series, due to the increase in the supply proportion of Sony and II-VI.

3. Lumentum / Wenmao's significant loss of iPhone VCSEL orders means that the two companies will face structural risks due to Sony's technological advantages, that is, Sony may continue to steal Lumentum / Wenmao orders from customers of other brands.

Guo Mingyi said that the two models of the iPhone 15 Pro, equipped with improved LiDAR sensors, can further improve shooting performance such as night mode and autofocus, and can further enhance the AR experience.

The LiDAR scanner, first introduced on the iPad Pro model in 2020, measures light distance and captures depth information, and the hardware is expected to remain unique to the iPhone 15 Pro model.
