Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, February 24, according to Digitimes, industry sources revealed that Intel has decided to postpone its previous order for 3nm chips placed in TSMC until the fourth quarter of 2024. As a result, some users think that the launch of new processors based on Intel 3 and TSMC N3 technology will be delayed.
Intel CEO Pat Kissinger (Pat Gelsinger) now responds to rumors of "postponing the use of Intel 3 and TSMC N3 products". He stressed that all 3nm projects announced so far will be released in 2024.
So far, Intel has unveiled three products that will use 3nm-class processes, including the Arrow Lake, Granite Rapids and Sierra Forest families, and these processors are expected to be released as scheduled in 2024.
"the 3nm program is on track, including the Arrow Lake project with TSMC and our internal Intel 3 projects Granite Rapids and Sierra Forest," Kissinger said on a conference call on Intel's capital allocation update.
"I'm a little surprised by these rumors. You may have noticed a similar discussion on Intel 4 a few months ago, as well as some of our other projects involving TSMC, which were obviously wrong at the time."
According to previous announcements, Intel will produce its family of Granite Rapids (based on high-performance cores) and Sierra Forest (based on energy-efficient cores) for data centers on Intel3 nodes (formerly 5nm). This manufacturing process is essentially an improved version of Intel4, which improves performance per watt.
So far, Intel has only revealed two products that will be produced on its Intel3 nodes, namely Granite Rapids and Sierra Forest, although CTOnews.com has not seen further details so far.
Things can be a little complicated for external 3nm projects. According to Intel PPT, Intel will use TSMC's N3 to produce iGPU chips for its Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake consumer processors in 2023 and 2024, but there have been reports that Intel has delayed this plan.
In August 2022, a market research company said Intel decided to postpone plans to produce Meteor Lake in TSMC's N3 process. At the time, Intel did not comment specifically on any 3nm-based projects, but revealed that Meteor Lake was expected to be released in 2023.
The company recently said that its Arrow Lake will be made up of small chips produced on Intel 20A nodes and TSMC N3E, which will arrive in 2024.
"so our plan has not changed," Kissinger said. " There is good power on the client side, server side, and AXG (graphics acceleration) side. We are also constantly gaining the favor of contract manufacturing customers. So I am glad that we have overcome many implementation challenges. You know, these rumors, like many other rumors, will turn out to be completely wrong. "
